Holy Thursday Masses

Celebrations on this day are important in the life of the Church.

“The Mass of Chrism is properly celebrated by the bishop with his clergy.  It is a sign of the unity and communion of the priests with their bishop. If it takes place on Thursday morning, the concelebrants may also concelebrate the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper. […]  Those receiving communion at the Chrism Mass may receive again in the evening, at the Mass of the Lord’s Supper.

The Blessing of the Oil of the Sick takes place [at the Chrism Mass] before the end of the Eucharistic Prayer, but the blessing of the Oil of Catechumens and the consecration of the Chrism takes place after communion.  Nevertheless, for pastoral reasons, it is permitted for the entire rite of blessing to take place after the Liturgy of the Word.

The newly blessed holy oils can be brought to individual parishes before the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper, or at some other suitable time.” [2]

The Sacred Paschal Triduum

“Since Christ accomplished his work of human redemption and of the perfect glorification of God principally through his Pascal Mystery, in which by dying he has destroyed our death, and by rising restored our life, the sacred Paschal Triduum of the Passion and Resurrection of the Lord shines forth as the high point of the entire liturgical year.  Therefore the preeminence that Sunday has in the week, the Solemnity of Easter has in the liturgical year.  The Paschal Triduum of the passion and Resurrection of the Lord begins with the evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper, has its center in the Easter Vigil, and closes with Vespers (Evening Prayer) on the Sunday of the Resurrection.” (Universal Norms, 18-19)
