Reading 1:
Daniel 3:14-20, 91-92, 95

King Nebuchadnezzar said:
"Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego,
that you will not serve my god,
or worship the golden statue that I set up?
Be ready now to fall down and worship the statue I had made,
whenever you hear the sound of the trumpet,
flute, lyre, harp, psaltery, bagpipe,
and all the other musical instruments;
otherwise, you shall be instantly cast into the white-hot furnace;
and who is the God who can deliver you out of my hands?"
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered King Nebuchadnezzar,
"There is no need for us to defend ourselves before you
in this matter.
If our God, whom we serve,
can save us from the white-hot furnace
and from your hands, O king, may he save us!
But even if he will not, know, O king,
that we will not serve your god
or worship the golden statue that you set up."

King Nebuchadnezzar's face became livid with utter rage
against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.
He ordered the furnace to be heated seven times more than usual
and had some of the strongest men in his army
bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego
and cast them into the white-hot furnace.

Nebuchadnezzar rose in haste and asked his nobles,
"Did we not cast three men bound into the fire?"
"Assuredly, O king," they answered.
"But," he replied, "I see four men unfettered and unhurt,
walking in the fire, and the fourth looks like a son of God."
Nebuchadnezzar exclaimed,
"Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego,
who sent his angel to deliver the servants who trusted in him;
they disobeyed the royal command and yielded their bodies
rather than serve or worship any god
except their own God."

Commentary on
Dn3:14-20, 91-92, 95

The story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego is recounted in the reading from the Book of Daniel. The three brothers, companions of the Book’s hero, Daniel, are commanded to violate Mosaic Law by worshiping a graven image. In their love for God the reject this command and are condemned to be burned alive. Rather than perishing in the fire King Nebuchadnezzar had prepared for them, God sends an angle to intervene and the brothers are saved and the king is converted.

This passage, popular during the persecutions of both the Jews in their exile and the Christians, served as a sign of the promise of salvation for the faithful, proof that God would not abandon them in their need.

Commentary on
Dn3:52, 53, 54, 55, 56

The canticle of the three brothers, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego is recounted in part in this passage. This is the song they sang as they waited in the white hot furnace. It is a hymn of praise which is an early litany of the creation and salvation of God.

Gospel:
John 8:31-42

Jesus said to those Jews who believed in him,
"If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples,
and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
They answered him, "We are descendants of Abraham
and have never been enslaved to anyone.
How can you say, 'You will become free'?"
Jesus answered them, "Amen, amen, I say to you,
everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.
A slave does not remain in a household forever,
but a son always remains.
So if the Son frees you, then you will truly be free.
I know that you are descendants of Abraham.
But you are trying to kill me,
because my word has no room among you.
I tell you what I have seen in the Father's presence;
then do what you have heard from the Father."

They answered and said to him, "Our father is Abraham."
Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children,
you would be doing the works of Abraham.
But now you are trying to kill me,
a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God;
Abraham did not do this.
You are doing the works of your father!"
So they said to him, "We were not born of fornication.
We have one Father, God."
Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me,
for I came from God and am here;
I did not come on my own, but he sent me."

Commentary on
Jn 8:31-42

In this passage from St. John’s Gospel Jesus continues his discourse with the Jews “who believed in him”. This statement is ironic since just a few verses later he says (v. 37) “But you are trying to kill me.” The point made here is that all are enslaved by sin and only Jesus, who is sent by the Father, can release us from that slavery. As much as the Jews argue that they have come from Abraham, Jesus pushes back and says if you came from Abraham your actions would make that clear, if you believe in God that also would be clear – something different must therefore be true.

Reflection:

St. John gives us those amazing words “…and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” The Jews of his time could not understand what he was saying. They thought they already had the truth as the kept saying “We are descendants of Abraham”. Because they had been given the law and the prophets they thought they had the truth. In fact they were very close, as our Lord knew. They only missed the final piece, the piece that came to fulfill the law and the prophets, to tie them back to God the father; the piece that was Jesus.

Because they could not see this, Jesus told them; “Amen, amen, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.” They still could not see what he was telling them. They had the law and the prophets but without their heart. Without living God’s law they (and we) are not living in the freedom Jesus promised.

All of this comes to us as we look a few short days ahead now to the holiest time of the year. But do we still we find our selves bound by our sins? Are we behind the bars of greed or lust? Are we rotting in the dungeon of hatred or envy? Can we truly unlock our selves from these things to place God first in our lives so we can live in that marvelous freedom we have been promised? Only we can unlock those chains or open those doors.

It is only when we offer our contrition; our true repentance to the Lord that the bonds of slavery to sin may be released. If we are unable to do that, we carry that burden and much like a cancer it consumes us. Like a disease it infects our total health; it poisons all we attempt to do. In his infinite wisdom the Lord came to us and offered himself as the sacrifice of atonement so that we could lay these chains at his feet and return to the grace filled state the loving Father longs for us to achieve.

Have you ever noticed, coming out of the confessional after having received the Sacrament of Reconciliation, how you feel lighter, as if a weight had been lifted. Does that remind you of the joy a freed captive feels when they know they are truly free? It is this freedom that the Lord refers to.

The tremendous gift we have been given are the keys to unlock the chains we have forged for our selves and it is free, a gift from the one whose death was a victory and whose gift of the Holy Spirit provides the means of our escape.
